What is agent sprawl?

Agent sprawl is the uncontrolled growth of AI agents across an organization, deployed by different teams or tools without central coordination or oversight. Over time, this leads to duplicated agents performing similar tasks, inconsistent permissions and security settings, unclear ownership, and difficulty tracking which agents exist, what data they can access, and what actions they're taking.
